The History of The Cherryville Mill
During the late 19th century, the textile industry entered the scene with a bang in Cherryville, NC. Cherryville’s first cotton mill, the Cherryville Manufacturing Plant (our very own Cherryville Mill), was incorporated in 1891 by the Gaston Manufacturing Company and construction began at the turn of the century and was completed in 1908.
Sometime in the 1930s, the Cherryville Mill changed hands when it was purchased by Doran Textiles. Doran Textiles titled the Cherryville Mill the Dora Mill #1 (later to be renamed the Shelby Yarn Mill) and it operated successfully another 60 years before closing in the late 90s.
Since then, the Mill has fallen into a state of disrepair. It has changed hands a few times and was most recently used as storage for a local salvage company, Depot Salvage.
In 2024, preservation efforts began on the Cherryville Mill. The efforts are aimed at eliminating all deferred maintenance to ensure the building will stand another 100 years and to clean the mill of over 150,000 sq ft worth of piled salvage materials and trash.
Our hopes are to find the right developer who will start the next chapter in the history of the Cherryville Mill.
